Macintosh Common Lisp was a programming environment created by Apple and Coral Software in 1988 to allow developers to create applications using the Common Lisp Object System (CLOS) on the Macintosh platform. The environment let programmers take advantage of the power and productivity of Lisp while accessing Mac-specific functionality. It came with an integrated development environment, a compiler for creating standalone applications, and support libraries for building user interfaces that fit within the Mac user experience at the time. Although it achieved some popularity among academics and research institutions due to its combination of advanced language features with ease of application deployment on early Mac systems, it eventually faded from use as alternative languages gained ground.
