Anvil is a video game development engine designed and owned by Ubisoft's Montréal studio. The engine was first used in Assassin’s Creed II, and has since been employed across subsequent titles in the series, as well as for other Ubisoft games like Watch Dogs. Anvil's key features include an emphasis on open-world gameplay that works without loading screens between different areas of the game world, cross-platform compatibility, and impressive graphics capabilities to bring immersive historical settings or modern urban environments to life. Over time, Anvil has evolved with new iterations such as AnvilNext and AnvilNext 2.0 to provide better performance on both current- and next-generation gaming platforms while incorporating more advanced physics engines, lighting systems, environmental effects, and procedural generation techniques for building landscapes.
