FoundationDB is a distributed database technology for building high-performance applications. It combines the scalability of NoSQL systems with the traditional ACID properties found in SQL databases. The architecture uses a shared-nothing, transactional key-value store that can automatically migrate data and rebalance load across machines without interrupting service, making it suitable for cloud infrastructure and virtualized environments. Developers can interact with FoundationDB using an ordered key-value model or by creating layers of abstraction to fit their specific needs. In 2015, Apple acquired FoundationDB and released the source code as open-source in April 2018, leading to community-driven improvements and continued development following its acquisition by The Linux Foundation in early 2021.
