Futhark is a programming language for writing high-performance programs targeting GPUs and data-parallel accelerators. Futhark's syntax resembles Haskell, using strong typing and immutability by default. Its core feature is in the representation of programs as pure, first-order functions over multi-dimensional arrays called SOACs (second-order array combinators), which allows it to express complex parallel computations concisely and safely through higher-order functions. The compiler can generate OpenCL or CUDA code. Futhark aims to make general-purpose GPU computing accessible by abstracting away low-level details of parallel programming while ensuring efficiency through static analysis and optimization strategies enabled by its functional design principles.
