Duplicity is an open-source backup solution that provides encrypted, bandwidth-efficient backup for Unix-based operating systems. Using standard tools like SSH and GnuPG, Duplicity can back up data to local folders or remote servers. It creates incremental backups by examining changes in the source directory's content since the last full backup and then only transferring the new or modified files. The incremental backups are stored as encrypted archive files, which can be incrementally updated without re-transferring existing data and without exposing it unencrypted on remote systems. This reduces both storage requirements and network bandwidth usage while maintaining security through encryption standards such as GnuPG's symmetric-key encryption algorithms.
