IBM PL/S (Programming Language for System/360, 1966) is a computer programming language designed to support systems programming in the IBM System/360 and its successors. It's an extended version of Fortran IV, with additional features like block-structured programming constructs and facilities specifically tailored to interact with the hardware architecture of mainframe computers. These faculties include bit manipulation, substring extraction, and other low-level operations that can be used in operating system development and other systems software tasks. By adding these features directly into the language itself rather than relying on external libraries or assembler code, PL/S was intended to facilitate more efficient development processes by simplifying code integration without sacrificing performance within the mainframe environment. Despite being initially proprietary to IBM, elements of PL/S have since influenced other languages and tools for mainframe development.
