Silverlight was a deprecated application framework developed by Microsoft. It allowed developers to create rich web applications with features similar to those of Adobe Flash. Using a subset of the .NET Framework, Silverlight integrated graphics, multimedia (including audio and video playback), animation, and interactivity into web experiences without requiring additional browser plugins. The platform's development tools facilitated the building of cross-browser and cross-platform applications for Windows and macOS systems. After its release in 2007 as a direct competitor to Adobe Flash Player, Silverlight fell out of favor with the rise of HTML5 due to limited mobile support as well as security concerns related to browser plugins in general. Microsoft ended support for Silverlight on October 12, 2021.
