C/AL (Client/Server Application Language) is a legacy programming language used to customize Microsoft Dynamics NAV. It was designed for building business applications in the MRP/ERP space and allowed developers to create customizations including fields, tables, forms and reports within the application. C/AL interacted with the database through Data Manipulation Language (DML) statements such as INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. In 2018, Microsoft announced that all new features would be written in AL for Dynamics 365 Business Central, marking the deprecation of C/AL in favor of Visual Studio Code extensions written using AL code behind tables or pages.
