Fortress is a discontinued programming language for high-performance computing. The language was designed by Sun Microsystems with the goal of improving productivity in parallel computing environments through enhanced support for correctness, performance, and parallelism. Fortress featured mathematical syntax to facilitate expression of scientific and engineering problems directly within code. The project was abandoned after Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2010, but many concepts developed in Fortress influenced subsequent languages and tools used for technical computing tasks.
